Final Report: Supervision and Remedial Work for Karinga Dam (January – December 2022)

After completing the supervision activities for the Karinga Dam Remedial Work over a period of 12 months, from January 2022 to December 2022 (a total of 360 calendar days), we have compiled the following summary of the project’s execution and progress.
6.1.1 Supervision Activities

The supervision of the Karinga Dam Remedial Work was carried out over the 12-month period, with 100% progress achieved by December 2022. The main stages of the supervision process included the following steps:

Contract Signing: The first step in the project involved formalizing the contract with the responsible parties.
Pre-Construction Meeting (PCM): Before work commenced, a PCM was conducted to align all stakeholders and discuss the project scope and timeline.
Mobilization and Demobilization: The necessary machinery, workforce, and materials were moved to the site, and post-work, these were removed accordingly.
Construction Supervision: Continuous monitoring and supervision were conducted to ensure that the construction activities adhered to the planned design and schedule.
Monthly Coordination Meetings: Regular meetings were held each month to address ongoing issues, ensure alignment between the contractor and supervisory teams, and track progress.
Reporting: Several key reports were generated during the project:
Quality Assurance Plan (QAP): This report outlined the quality standards and procedures that were followed during the project.
Preliminary Report: This report summarized the initial findings and plan before construction began.
Monthly Reports: For a period of seven months, detailed reports were submitted, tracking progress and identifying any challenges faced.
Invoice Reports: Over the same seven-month period, financial invoices were generated and submitted to ensure transparency in payment and cost tracking.
Final Report: At the conclusion of the project, a comprehensive report was compiled summarizing the entire supervision process.
Blueprint Album (A3 format): A set of printed blueprints in A3 format was created to document the design and changes made during the project.

During the execution of the supervision activities, various challenges arose, most notably due to unpredictable weather conditions. Continuous rain, at times lasting for an entire week, significantly affected the work schedule, resulting in delays. However, through close coordination between the project management (PPK), on-site staff, and the contractor, these delays were mitigated. By optimizing work during periods of favorable weather, the project was able to stay on track and ultimately meet its completion deadlines.
6.1.2 Physical Implementation

The physical remedial work for the Karinga Dam was carried out by TARUNA DWIPONGGO KSO, with an overall progress rate of 88% achieved by December 2022. The main stages of physical work included the following steps:

Contract Signing: As with the supervision activities, the remedial work began with the formal signing of the contract.
Pre-Construction Meeting (PCM): A preparatory meeting was held to ensure that all parties were aligned on the scope of work, schedule, and expectations.
Implementation of Work: The physical work commenced in stages, with various tasks completed over the course of the project.

The key tasks that were carried out as part of the remedial work until December 2022 included:

Preparation Work: Initial site preparations were undertaken to ensure that the area was ready for the primary construction activities.
Sediment Dredging: A major component of the work involved the dredging of accumulated sediment from the dam to restore its capacity.
Installation of Blanket/Geomembrane: To enhance the structural integrity of the dam, a geomembrane (blanket) was installed.
Procurement and Installation of Gabions: Gabions (cage-like structures filled with stones) were installed at the upstream end of the dam to provide additional support and control erosion.
Construction of Supporting Structures: Additional structures were built to support the overall functionality and stability of the dam.

Challenges and Solutions

The main challenge encountered during both the supervision and physical implementation of the remedial work was the adverse weather conditions, particularly heavy and sustained rainfall. This significantly impacted the construction schedule, making it difficult to adhere to the original timeline. Despite these setbacks, the project management team, in coordination with the contractor, made adjustments to the work schedule. By intensifying activities during periods of favorable weather, the team was able to make up for lost time and maintain overall progress.
Conclusion

The Karinga Dam Remedial Project was successfully completed despite the challenges posed by inclement weather. The supervision activities ensured that the project adhered to quality and safety standards, while the physical construction work progressed steadily. With 100% completion of the supervision activities and 88% completion of the physical remedial work by the end of December 2022, the project stands as a testament to effective collaboration and strategic problem-solving.
